About

Mark Korthuis

The work is always about the person in front of me.

What I Do

I am a CEO, executive coach, strategist, and therapist. I work with athletes, leaders, and individuals who are doing hard things and want to do them better.

My practice is built around a simple idea: performance, leadership, and wellbeing are psychological before they are anything else. The people I work with are not looking for surface-level fixes. They want to understand the patterns that drive their behaviour, sharpen the way they think under pressure, and build something that holds over time.

I also advise organizations on strategy, culture, and technology, particularly in healthcare, mental health, and the nonprofit sector.

What Shaped the Work

I competed as a professional soccer player and represented Canada at the youth national team level. I was a two-time national champion with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. That experience taught me what pressure actually feels like inside a competition, how identity becomes entangled with results, and what it takes to come back from setbacks that feel definitive.

After sport, I spent over a decade in healthcare leadership. I served as President and CEO of two foundations in Alberta, where I helped raise more than $20 million to expand access to mental health care. During that time, I was part of the teams that launched Canada’s first publicly available rTMS clinic, Alberta’s first 24/7 mental health clinic, and Kickstand, one of the province’s first integrated youth mental health hubs. I also helped create Text4Hope, a digital mental health initiative that supported more than 50,000 people during the pandemic.

That work gave me a deep understanding of how systems change, how organizations grow, and how leadership operates under real constraint. It also reinforced something I had learned in sport: the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it is almost always a psychological one.

My leadership has been recognized with Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40, the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, and induction into the University of Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

Beyond the Practice

I serve as an Advisor to Dalhousie University’s Centre for Global Mental Health and as a Director with the Global Psychological eHealth Foundation, where I help expand technology-enabled access to evidence-based mental healthcare. I have also advised governments, NGOs, and mental health technology start-ups on innovation, policy, and system design.

The Podcast and Writing

I host Everything Is Mental, a podcast exploring resilience, leadership, performance, and what it means to live with clarity in a noisy world. I also write regularly on psychology, performance, and leadership. You can find my essays here.
